24 Hour Hazwoper

This course is designed to reflect the training requirements for employees working on-site only occasionally for a specific limited task, and who are unlikely to be exposed over permissible exposure limits and published exposure limits. This training is also required for workers regularly on site who work in areas which have been monitored and fully characterized indicating that exposures are under permissible exposure limits and published exposure limits where respirators are not necessary, and the characterization indicates that there are no health hazards or the possibility of an emergency developing. Employees cannot participate in or supervise field activities until they have been trained to a level required by their job function. Participants will be shown PPE specific to Hazardous Materials Technicians & Specialists Level response and go over an emergency response plan in recognition of a HAZMAT incident. Specifically, they will interact with SCBAs and other respirators. An understanding of how to use a spill kit and other decon procedures will be covered as well.

Topics Covered

  • Hazardous Materials Technicians respond to releases with the purpose of stopping those releases. They will approach a release for this purpose. Such employees (hazmat team members) are required to have at least 24 hours of training.
  • Hazardous Materials Specialists respond with and provide support to Hazardous Materials Technicians. Their duties parallel those of the Hazardous Materials Technicians; however, these duties require more specific knowledge of the various substances they may be called on to control. This level also acts as a liaison between federal, state, and local government officials with regard to site activities. Such employees (hazmat team members) must have at least 24 hours of training.
